Technical Experience
Dr. Peters received a B.S. in Chemistry
(Magna Cum Laude) from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania,
in 1962, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University, Palo Alto,
California, in 1967. He spent about three years with Dow Chemical
Company in Midland, Michigan, where he led research projects on volatile
anesthetics, organic fluorine compounds, elastomers, herbicides and
high explosives.
Dr. Peters was a research chemist for 9 years at SRI International
in Menlo Park, California, holding a variety of chemical research
and management positions, in specialty explosives, volatile anesthetics,
and process development. In the medical area, Dr. Peters has been
concerned with medical instrumentation and medical instruments, pharmaceutical
compositions, biomedical applications of polymers, contact lenses,
DNA and RNA biological materials, specialty polypeptides, synthetic
lung surfactants, growth factors, medical diagnostics, and drug intermediates.
He has also been involved in the following areas of technology: chelate
removal of toxins and toxic metals, specialty polymers, membranes,
solution chemistry of high polymers, composite materials, superconductors,
fuel cells, and ceramics. Dr. Peters is a co-inventor of seven U.S.
patents and is author or co-author of over 30 scientific and legal
publications and presentations.

Experience
Dr. Peters
holds a J.D. degree from Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, California,
received in 1978. He was a corporate patent attorney with Syntex Corporation,
specializing in pharmaceuticals, processes, polymers and contact lens
technology. He was a partner of Phillips, Moore, Lempio & Finley for
over ten years, during which time he filed and prosecuted over 300
U.S. and foreign patent applications. He also conducted a number of
successful appeals before the United States Patent Office Board of
Appeals. He is a founding partner of Peters, Verny, Jones & Biksa,
LLP and Peters, Verny, Jones & Schmitt, LLP.
Dr. Peters currently has prime responsibility for a number of clients
including the U.S. Department of Energy, SRI International, and the
University of California. He has been co-council with medical and
diagnostic litigation, including Syntex Corporation v. N. Novicky
and Fused Contacts, Inc. and Syva Corporation v. Ames
Research Laboratory.
Professional Affiliations
Dr. Peters is a member of the State Bar of California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Ninth Circuit, and the Federal District Court. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He has been involved with the following professional activities: American Chemical Society (ACS), member of the Patent Committee and co-founder of the Division of Chemistry and Law and twice Chairman, Santa Clara Valley Section, Executive Committee; Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association; and San Francisco Intellectual Property Law Association. He is listed in American Men and Women in Science. He is author of the ACS reference book, Understanding Chemical Patents, 2nd ed. |
